Kibirige Derrick

Kibirige Derrick will be 8 years old some time this year. (His actual date of birth is unknown.) He lives in the village of Lwanjuki, Nakasongola District, Uganda, East Africa. Derrick’s parents are divorced. His father is mentally disturbed, and his mother lives in Ntuti, another village. Derrick lives with his grandmother and six cousins. Their home is a small house of handmade mud bricks and a tin roof. The children sleep on beddings made of old rags and a grass mat. Derrick suffers from no serious health problems currently. However, most children in East Africa experience periodic dysentery, upper respiratory problems, and deadly malaria. The family’s diet consists of potatoes and cassava, a root plant. They cook outside over an open fire. Their toilet is an outdoor pit latrine. Derrick is in grade 1 at Lwanjuki Primary School. Sponsorship makes it possible for Derrick to continue his education and provides funds for food, clothing, and medical care.
