Raise Up

Tom_Kathy & studentsRaise Up, the newest ministry of African Children’s Mission, is a response to The Great Commission: To Go and To Teach.
How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.” Romans 10:14-15. On the right are Tom Leighow and his wife, Kathy, founders of the Raise Up ministry, and a group of Bible Training Center for Pastors and Church Leaders students.

The vision of Raise Up is to respond to the call of God for the spiritual and educational needs of East African people to defend the Christian faith in the Nakasongola District of Uganda. Raise Up is a multi-media resource and library facility for providing deeper training and education in Christian evangelism, discipleship, biblical studies and theology (1 Peter 3:15). The resource center will house audio/video resources including: resource books; projectors; computers; Bible software; Christian educational videos; chalk boards; desks; writing materials and other classroom supplies for teaching, training and learning.

Supported by African Children’s Mission, the Raise Up facility will provide a setting for training pastors, church leaders and laypersons in biblical studies and Christian education. Additionally, the facility will serve as a Christian educational center for conducting seminars, Bible studies, BTCP courses (Bible Training Center for Pastors), leadership training and as an educational center for preparing pastors for church planting and discipleship. The Raise Up facilities currently consist of the Bible resource center and a guest house for educators. The final phase will be a dormitory for student pastors and church leaders.

Tom with childrenThe missionaries and volunteers of African Children’s Mission have been doing God’s work in East Africa for over 20 years, providing not only physical aid, but pastoral ministry training and education for the movement of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Uganda. The photo to the left shows Tom and a fellow visiting volunteer sharing their faith with some of the children in ACM.

The idea of Raise Up came about after accepting a call from ACM to GO and TEACH as exhorted by Christ in Matthew 28:19. In 2008 the Lord impressed upon me the vision to “RAISE UP” a facility that would provide greater resources for teaching and training pastors to seed and shepherd flocks for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The name RAISE UP serves as an acronym to memorialize the life of my late wife, Rebecca Ann Leighow, whose life epitomizes the model Christian as described by our Lord in Matthew 25:35-36.
